Part snow, part ice, part mud (when you break through the ice).

Sunday is looking like it will be a better ski day then MTB day. I don't know about Moody but almost everything is frozen solid at the Pinnacle. If you don't have heavy duty studs, I'm not sure I'd recommend it, but I have to say running yesterday the thought definitely crossed my mind. Lots of frozen ground showing depending on your route. The only real problem I see for a ride would be as Brian pointed out, the lack of consistency: thin ice with running water below, frozen ground, glare ice, and frozen hard packed snow and from one moment to the next you don't know what the trail is going to dish out.

Isn't that the fun part about winter riding :?:

We have been really spoiled down here in NY this winter - 60 degrees last week riding in shorts and short sleeves at night was quite a treat 8) . looks like thats about to change this weekend though  .

I don't have my studs up north so I'll stay away from Newport this weekend - Gonna give Moody a go on Saturday morning - anyone want to join is more than welcome - looking to go around 8:30 or so...

fattireb,

I'm all about going for it, and taking what the trail dishes out. If I wasn't going away this weekend, I'd probably give it a go on the mountain bike Sat. :)

Riding the trails this time of year up here especially the Pinnacle can be a very dangerous proposition. 2 April's ago I took a 100 yard death slide down a steep rocky trail because the ground was still frozen but there was no snow to speak of and the riding was great until I came around a corner onto a steep north facing hill which unknown to me happened to be a bobsled run, wall to wall ice, nowhere to go, and too much speed to stop. Shortly after that I acquired some studded tires, although not sure they would have prevented the death slide but they sure do help.

Everyone's idea of fun is a little different, just wanted to give you some info to go on. Happy trails.

had an OK ride on Saturday at Moody - You sure where right on that ice info Rockboy :!: WOW - I've never seen singletrack ice up like it was in there. with studs it would have been a far more enjoyable ride :? - but even a bad day is on the bike is better than not being on the bike at all.....WHICH IS WHAT WE ARE DEALING WITH DOWN HERE WITH A FRESH 2 FEET OF WHITE STUFF THAT JUST FELL  - so much for the great conditions we have had...
