Someone remind me not to go on an easy ride with Ryan the day before racing. My own fault for beleiving that it was going to be easy. The riding was easy enough, but the hills at the end fo 30 miles were unsuspected! Fifteen miles more than I had originally planned... Anyway with that, Randy and I went to Rye thinking that we would just enjoy the race atmosphere and not put a great deal of effort into racing. Randy came out of the woods (listed as a XC run 5K, a little short in mileage though) sixth with only elite athletes ahead of him. I was 2nd out on the bike, but never saw the first rider out. About 14 solos went by me throughout the course until the last three miles where I found energy and went back by one of them and maintained pace with three of the others who passed me. We were the lead team when I handed off to Randy and he passed four solos in the woods and finished first among 17 teams, five and half minutes ahead of the second place team and 11th overall out of 174. I had a bike that was fourth (48 seconds back) among teams (31st overall). Randy was two minutes faster the second team runner on the first leg and about three minutes faster on the second leg. Overall he was sixth for the first and fourth for the second leg. Other than the Pinnacle Challenge, this was our first duathlon.
